$20, $25 and $30 an hour: how much is that after tax?

The table below uses the federal-only baseline: federal income tax plus Social Security and Medicare for a single filer working 40 hours a week all year, with no state income tax and no pre-tax deductions. Your stateโ€™s income tax comes on top โ€” find it in the hourly paycheck calculator or on any state page.

The hourly to salary formula

Annual salary = hourly rate ร— hours per week ร— 52. For a standard full-time schedule of 40 hours a week that is hourly rate ร— 2,080. To go the other way, divide your annual salary by 2,080.

  • Weekly pay = hourly rate ร— hours per week
  • Biweekly pay = weekly pay ร— 2
  • Semi-monthly pay = annual รท 24
  • Monthly pay = annual รท 12

If you don't work 40 hours a week

Part-time and unusual schedules change the multiplier. Multiply your hourly rate by weekly hours and by 52: at 30 hours a week the factor is 1,560; at 35 hours 1,820; at 37.5 hours 1,950. Paid time off counts as paid hours for salaried staff but not for most hourly workers, so hourly annual pay depends on how many hours you actually work.

Gross pay is only the start. This table shows estimated annual take-home pay for a single filer in a state with no income tax (Texas, as an example) โ€” see your own state on the state pages:

Things that change the math

  • Overtime at 1.5ร— raises annual pay โ€” see the overtime guide.
  • Unpaid time โ€” holidays and vacation you don't get paid for reduce hours.
  • State taxes โ€” the same wage takes home different amounts in different states.
  • Benefits โ€” pre-tax deductions lower taxable pay; see pre-tax deductions.

Use the paycheck calculator with "Hourly" selected to include overtime, deductions and your state.
